Last week I talked about Seth Rogen, who had been MIA for awhile and returned with a comedic vengeance in The Green Hornet and now it’s time for at least a step in the right direction for someone else. Ivan Reitman has only directed three films now in the last ten years and could possibly be on a comeback tour. As lame as My Super Ex-Girlfriend was at least Evolution had more elements to it that worked than didn’t. With No Strings Attached, Reitman may finally have a true hit on his hands even if he’s still not up to par with his greatest hits of the 80s. With all the buzz surrounding Natalie Portman as of late (Black Swan), most people are already considering No Strings Attached to be her Norbit. It seems like there’s always someone following up a powerhouse Oscar-bait performance with another disastrous film right before the big show. At least this time Portman has again chosen more wisely than others (Valentine’s Day Renell Wren Jersey , The Back-up Plan) in her walk of shame through the rom-com genre. And were it not for the association of her co-star, Ashton Kutcher, and being released mid-January, no one would be speaking as ill of the film before seeing it as they already are. Starting “15 Years Ago Ryan Finley Jersey ,” we meet the younger versions of Adam (Dylan Hayes) and Emma (Stefanie Scott) having the worst meet-cute ever. While he seeks condolence over his parents divorcing, Adam point blank asks Emma if he can finger her. (Yeah, you read that right.) Skipping ahead to “5 Years Ago,” we find the KutcherPortman versions of Adam and Emma meeting again at a college pajama party where Emma’s idea of appropriate attire is long johns deeming her a “sexy pioneer.” Emma likes Adam enough to innocently ask him to go with her to “some stupid thing” the next day. Turns out “some stupid thing” is her father’s funeral where afterwards she sends him on his way telling him that if he’s lucky he’ll never see her again.
No Strings Attached plays out exactly as you would think. Kutcher and Portman play Adam and Emma Germaine Pratt Jersey , two people that have been bumping into one another for the past 15 years but until now have never done anything more than talk. Suddenly, after one night together turns into a second night together, Emma suggests they make an attempt at becoming friends with benefits. Being a male of prurient mind and body, Adam agrees. But Drew Sample Jersey , as life tells us, such arrangements don’t often work and in order for this to be a movie it’s not going to work this time either. The humor here is pretty much your standard attempt at R-rated teenage raunch, humor that has pretty much lost my interest as it has become old hat at this point. It’s now a matter of figuring out new ways to reference male and female genitalia and the variety of activities that can be done with them. Who would’ve ever thought face-value jokes, such as when Ludacris jokes about “busting a nut” Jonah Williams Jersey , would become the cliched norm? I will admit there is one great scene where Portman pulls something of a Snooki moment and drunkenly asks a cabbie to take her to “Adam’s house.” When asked where that is she simply replies, “Where Adam lives.” I laughed. The film’s greatest success is in screenwriter Elizabeth Meriwether managing to tell a story everyone in the theater knows how it’s going to turn out and doing it with a modicum of reality. Of course, certain situations arise that make it easier for our two protagonists to come together or move apart, but the fact there were moments where I thought the narrative may actually go somewhere other than the obvious is worthy of mention. On the opposite side Joe Mixon Jersey , the script rarely interjects anything all that new onto the landscape and the characters are a little bit thin. For example, Portman’s character is never all that accessible as her motivations and reasons for her unwillingness to commit are never fully fleshed out. There’s an attempt to explain things, but it’s not enough to fully connect with the character or deliver an ending as powerful as I’m sure Reitman hoped.
This time of year seems to bring out the parade of romantic-comedies-possibly due to Valentine’s Day-but, whether you are in the mood for love Jessie Bates III Jersey , or just wanting a good laugh, No Strings Attached offers a veritable chocolate box of sweetly humorous moments that are sure to satisfy any craving. Emma (Natalie Portman) is an uniquely independent young woman. Unlike most ladies her age, Emma isn’t looking for commitment, or long term love A.J.
